Through-Water or Hardwire—What is the Difference?
T
hrough-water voice communications refers to underwater communications that use water as
the conduit to carry a signal. Other titles for the same type of underwater communications are:
Wireless, Sonic, Ultrasonic, or Acoustic telephones. They all achieve the same task—to send voice
communications through the water.
This differs greatly from a hard-wire underwater communications device which would rely on a cable
to carry the transmission to and from the diver(s) and the surface. Hard-wire communication has
the greatest potential for clear communications. As long as the wires are firmly connected and
well-maintained, the communications will be clear (like an intercom). The major draw back is the
diver has to pull a cable along with him while he/she dives. However, in many situations, the diver is
already tethered or on surface supplied air (SSA).
Getting the Most Out of Your Comms
M
any factors can contribute to having a bad experience with underwater communications. To
achieve optimal performance from your system you MUST:
Replace or recharge your batteries! If batteries are running low, the power needed to run the
system is not optimal and can negatively affect the sound quality.
Make sure to inspect all wires and cables prior to using the equipment. Power on all of the elements
and gently adjust the cables to see if any possible shorts exist in the wires. Visually inspect cables to
see if bare wire is exposed or frayed.
Adjust the placement of the microphone in the mask. If the microphone is too far away or too close
to your mouth, the quality of the communications will suffer. Optimal placement is to the side, almost
touching your mouth.
How long have you been using the same Hot Mic? Over time, elements in the Hot Mic can wear out.
The amount of time before replacement varies and is affected by use and care for the equipment.
The Hot Mic has a date stamp to help determine the microphone’s age. If you need a microphone
that requires less care and can withstand the elements, ask us about switching to our ceramic Su-
per Mic.
